Inventor Profiles and the Patents Filed Under Their Names

Inventors are the people named on the face of a patent as having made the invention. They must be natural persons; a company cannot be an inventor. That is a factual question about who contributed to the conception, and getting it wrong is a defect in the patent rather than a formality.

Ownership is a separate matter. An inventor working under an employment agreement will usually have assigned the rights in advance, which is why most patents issue with an organisation named as assignee. Those are collected under assignees, and the two indexes answer different questions: what did this person invent, versus what does this organisation hold.

Where a profile lists patents, a number is linked only when the record for it exists in this archive. Unlinked numbers are real filings we simply do not hold — a link to a page that does not exist would be worse than none.

On names: matching is imperfect. Common names, inventors who published under different forms of their name across a career, and transliterated names all defeat automatic grouping. Where a distinction matters, the official record governs.
