History of Invention: Patents That Changed the Record

Long-form writing about individual patent documents and about how the patent record itself works. Each article is anchored in a document this archive actually holds, so every citation can be followed to the record and from there to the official source.

Two kinds of piece sit here. Some take a single filing — a propulsion arrangement, a muffler, a method for separating charge with light — and read it closely: what it claims, what problem the claim was drafted around, and what the engineering cost of that solution was. Others are about reading patents at all: why the claims and not the abstract define the invention, what a D-prefix number protects, how the classification schemes work and why an old class number needs resolving rather than searching.

None of it is legal advice. It is written to make primary documents legible to someone who has no reason to have learned the conventions.
