Assignee Organisations and Their Patent Holdings

An assignee is whoever owned a patent at the moment it was granted — in most cases an employer, under an agreement the inventor signed long before the filing existed. The name printed on the document is a snapshot at grant, not a statement about who owns it today.

That distinction matters more than it looks. Patents are bought, sold, used as collateral and moved with corporate acquisitions, and none of that is visible on the document itself. A patent whose face names a manufacturer may sit today with an entity that has never built anything.

Sorting an organisation's records by filing date is the most useful thing these pages do: a list becomes a research trajectory, showing which problems were taken up, which were abandoned, and which were returned to years later. Individual inventors are indexed separately under inventors.

On grouping: assignee names are normalised to build this index, which is a best effort rather than a legally exact one. Filings by one group frequently sit under several subsidiary names, and two entries that look distinct may be the same organisation.
