| Abstract: |
A new and distinct variety of Verbena plant, substantially as herein illustrated and described, characterized particularly as to novelty by its rose flowers, that turn to light pink when the flower matures, early flowering and a habit that is very compact and later spreading. |
| Claim: |
What is claimed is:
1. A new and distinct cultivar of Verbena plant named `Carpin,` as substantially illustrated and described herein. |
| Description: |
Latin name of the genus and species of the plant claimed: Verbena.times.hybrida.
Varietal denomination: `Carpin`.
BACKGROUND OF THE NEW PLANT
The present invention comprises a new distinct cultivar of Verbena, botanically known as Verbena.times.hybrida.
The new cultivar is propagated from cuttings resulting from the cross of `Oxena` and `B0977-7`. `Oxena` is a red flowering Verbena. `Oxena` is commercially available as `Babylon Red`. `B0977-7` is a burgundy flowering Verbena. `B0977-7` isnot commercially available and is not known by any synonyms. `Oxena` is patented as U.S. Plant Pat. No. 13,126. `B0977-7` has not been patented.
As a result of this cross the present cultivar was created in 2002 in Enkhuizen, Netherlands and has been repeatedly asexually reproduced by cuttings in Enkhuizen, Netherlands and Sarrians, France over a two year period. The new variety isstable and reproduces true to type in successive generations of asexual reproduction.
The new Verbena plant is an annual in most climatical zones in the US, only in zones 9 and 10 it is a perennial plant.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING
The new Verbena plant is illustrated by the accompanying photographic drawing which shows blooms, buds and foliage of the plant in full color, the color shown being as true as can be reasonably obtained by conventional photographic procedures.
DESCRIPTION OF THE NEW CULTIVAR
The following detailed descriptions set forth the distinctive characteristics of this new Verbena. The data which defines these characteristics were collected from asexual reproductions carried out in Enkhuizen, Netherlands. The plant historywas taken on 14 weeks old plants blossomed under natural light in a greenhouse and grown in a 10.5 cm container.
Color readings were taken in the greenhouse under ambient light. Color references are primarily to the R.H.S. Colour Chart of the Royal Horticultural Society of London.
