Abstract: A petunia cultivar particularly distinguished by its large, red flowers and early flowering is disclosed.
Claim: I claim:

1. A new and distinct petunia plant as shown and described herein.
Description: Genus and species: Petunia hybrida.

Variety denomination: `Whip Reeda`.

BACKGROUND OF THE NEW PLANT

The present invention comprises a new and distinct cultivar of petunia, botanically known as Petunia hybrida, and hereinafter referred to by the cultivar name `Whip Reeda`. The new cultivar originated from a hybridization made in the year 2001in Gilroy, Calif. The female parent was `794-1`, a red proprietary petunia line (unpatented), while the male parent was `785-1`, a purple proprietary petunia line (unpatented).

The new cultivar was created as a single plant in 2001 in Gilroy, Calif. and has been asexually reproduced repeatedly by vegetative cuttings and tissue culture in Gilroy, Calif. and Andijk, The Netherlands over a two-and-a-half-year period. The plant has also been trialed at Gilroy, Calif., Litchfield, Mich. and Andijk, The Netherlands. The present invention has been found to retain its distinctive characteristics through successive asexual propagations.

DESCRIPTION OF PHOTOGRAPH

This new petunia plant is illustrated by the accompanying photograph which shows mature inflorescences; the colors shown are as true as can be reasonably obtained by conventional photographic procedures. The photograph is of a four-month-oldplant grown in a lexan-covered greenhouse in a spring trial setting.

FIG. 1. The photograph shows mature inflorescences.

DESCRIPTION OF THE NEW CULTIVAR

The following detailed descriptions set forth the distinctive characteristics of `Whip Reeda`. The data which define these characteristics were collected from asexual reproductions carried out in Gilroy, Calif. The plant history was taken onfour-month-old plants grown in one-gallon pots in a poly-covered greenhouse. Color readings were taken in the greenhouse in the late winter season under natural light. Color references are primarily to The R.H.S. Colour Chart of The RoyalHorticultural Society of London (R.H.S.) (2001 edition). Texture description details were observed under a dissecting microscope.

COMPARISON WITH KNOWN CULTIVARS

`Whip Reeda` differs from the female parent `794-1` (unpatented) by having a more decumbent habit, shorter internodes and a brighter red flower than `794-1`. `Whip Reeda` differs from the male parent `785-1` (unpatented) by having largerflowers, red flower color and earlier bloom time.

`Whip Reeda` differs from the commercial variety `Keireom` (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 14,136) by having smaller elliptical-shaped foliage and a deeper red flower color with more color in the corolla.
