Abstract: A new and distinct cultivar of New Guinea Impatiens plant named `KLEI01025`, characterized by its compact, mounded and outwardly spreading plant habit; freely branching growth habit; dark green-colored leaves; freely flowering habit with flowers positioned above or beyond the foliage; and large red purple-colored flowers.
Claim: It is claimed:

1. A new and distinct cultivar of New Guinea Impatiens plant named `KLEI01025`, as illustrated and described.
Description: Botanicalclassification/cultivar designation: Impatiens hawkeri cultivar KLEI01025.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The present Invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of New Guinea Impatiens plant, botanically known as Impatiens hawkeri, and hereinafter referred to by the cultivar name KLEI01025.

The new Impatiens is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the Inventor in Stuttgart, Germany. The objective of the breeding program is to develop new freely branching Impatiens cultivars with numerous large flowers andinteresting flower and foliage colors.

The new Impatiens originated from a cross-pollination made by the Inventor during the fall of 1998 of a proprietary Impatiens hawkeri selection identified as code number R 398, not patented, as the female, or seed parent, with a proprietaryImpatiens hawkeri selection identified as code number R 391, not patented, as the male, or pollen parent. The cultivar KLEI01025 was discovered and selected by the Inventor as a flowering plant within the progeny of the stated cross-pollination incontrolled environment in Stuttgart, Germany, in May, 1999.

Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar by terminal cuttings taken in a controlled environment in Stuttgart, Germany, since 1999, has shown that the unique features of this new Impatiens are stable and reproduced true to type in successivegenerations.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of `KLEI01025`. These characteristics in combination distinguish `KLEI01025` as a new Impatiens cultivar and distinguish it from other knownImpatiens cultivars: 1. Compact, mounded and outwardly spreading plant habit. 2. Freely branching growth habit. 3. Dark green-colored leaves. 4. Freely flowering habit with flowers positioned above or beyond the foliage. 5. Large redpurple-colored flowers.

Plants of the new Impatiens differ primarily from plants of the female parent selection in flower color as plants of the female parent selection have pink-colored flowers. Compared to plants of the male parent selection, plants of the newImpatiens have larger flowers.

Plants of the new Impatiens can be compared to plants of the cultivar Miami, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 11,700. In side-by-side comparisons conducted in Stuttgart, Germany, plants of the new Impatiens differed from plants of the cultivarMiami in the following characteristics: 1. Plants of the new Impatiens had larger flowers than plants of the cultivar Miami. 2. Plants of the new Impatiens flowered later than plants of the cultivar Miami. 3. Flowers of plants of the new Impatienswere darker in color than flowers of plants of the cultivar Miami.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPH

The accompanying colored photograph illustrates the overall appearance of the new cultivar, showing the colors as true as it is reasonably possible to obtain in colored reproductions of this type. Colors in the photograph may differ slightlyfrom the color values cited in the detailed botanical description which accurately describe the colors of the new Impatiens. The photograph comprises a side perspective view of a typical flowering plant of `KLEI01025` grown in a container.

DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION

The cultivar KLEI01025 has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature and light intensity without, however, any variance in genotype. Theaforementioned photograph and following observations and measurements describe plants grown in Stuttgart, Germany during the spring, under commercial practice in a glass-covered greenhouse. Plants were grown in 12-cm containers for about 12 weeks afterplanting rooted cuttings. During the production period, day temperatures ranged from 18 to 24.degree. C. and night temperatures ranged from 16 to 18.degree. C. In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural SocietyColour Chart, 1995 Edition, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. Botanical classification: Impatiens hawkeri cultivar KLEI01025. Commercial classification: New Guinea Impatiens cultivar KLEI01025. Parentage: Femaleparent.--Proprietary Impatiens hawkeri selection identified as code number R 398, not patented. Male parent.--Proprietary Impatiens hawkeri selection identified as code number R 391, not patented. Propagation: Type cutting.--Terminal cuttings. Time toinitiate roots.--About 10 days at 20.degree. C. Time to produce a rooted cutting.--About 21 days at 20.degree. C. Root description.--Fine to thick, fibrous; cream-white in color. Rooting habit.--Freely branching, dense. Plant description: Generalappearance.--Compact, mounded and outwardly spreading plant habit. Growth and branching habit.--Freely branching, about five lateral branches per plant develop without pinching, that is, removal of the terminal apices. Freely flowering, usually about five flowers and flower buds in clusters per lateral branch. Flowers positioned above and beyond the foliage and typically faceupward or outward. Flowers rounded and mostly flat when fully opened. Flowers last about 10 to 14 days on the plant depending on environmental conditions. Petals self-cleaning; gynoecium persistent. Flowers not fragrant. Flowering indeterminate andcontinuous. Flowering season.--Year-round under greenhouse conditions. In the garden, flowering from spring until fall. Flower length.--About 8.3 cm. Disease/pest resistance: Plants of the new Impatiens have not been observed to be resistant to pathogens or pests commonto Impatiens. Weather tolerance: In Stuttgart, Germany, plants of the new Impatiens have been observed to be relatively tolerant to wind and rain and to tolerate temperatures from 12 to 30.degree. C.
