A method of generating sample data from a computerized model of a mass using acoustic simulations is disclosed. Initially, a computerized model of the mass is created based upon information that is known about the mass. The computerized model is divided into a plurality of layers, each layer representing physical features of the mass. Each layer is thereafter characterized by a propagation wavenumber. Acoustic wave equations for the layered model are then solved using a multi-level generalized minimal residual (GMRES) algorithm. The solved wave equations are employed to simulate acoustic data which is saved in an electronic memory for future use.
